Changing the Lens: A Wedding Industry Must-Attend
Terran here! I am Perrier Planning’s Lead Planner for our Ontario branch. I recently had the amazing opportunity to represent Perrier Planning at the 2021 Changing the Lens workshop. Changing the Lens is an inclusivity workshop for photographers and wedding industry folk in Ontario.
It was an absolutely beautiful day for a workshop, with clear, blue skies. There was excitement in the air and a buzz of conversation and warmth. And I came ready to learn. While I had heard amazing things, I had no idea how much value I would take from this event, both as a wedding planner and simply as a person.
The workshop covered a variety of topics including intersectionality, privilege, the institute of marriage, cancel culture & accountability, microaggressions, and definitions spanning from 2SLGBTQ + to anti-black racism to chosen family. It was a lot of content to digest, and no moment was boring, as the facilitators encouraged shared personal stories and open discussion throughout the workshop.
The Changing the Lens workshop was born from an unfortunate event that revealed to many the prejudiced underbelly of the wedding industry: a couple from the 2SLGBTQ + community was denied services by a videographer in Ontario. This incident went viral on social media, but still not much was being done to rectify the issue. Cue, Changing the Lens. This is an excellent opportunity to take action, educate, and build an inclusive community for your wedding business. The most valuable lesson I learned was to be aware of my own prejudices and privilege and to remain open to learning.
